Pro Tools is the industry standard in digital music recording.  Initially Pro Tools was only used in professional recording studios, but since the introduction of Pro Tools LE (now just called Pro Tools) and compatibility with 3rd party sound cards, it has never been easier to own your own Pro Tools system.

With versions of Pro Tools covering all budgets, Pro Tools has achieved market dominance.  One benefit of of the broad acceptance of Pro Tools products is that you can, for instance, record a demo in your own home and take it to a pro studio to be added to, engineered or mastered.

The scope of Pro Tools is enormous.  Easy as it is to record on Pro Tools, there are many things you can learn to do to improve and enhance your recordings, from sample-accurate editing of the recorded performances, automating mixes and adding real-time EQ (tone control), dynamics and effects to pitch shifting, time stretching, working with MIDI and synchronising music to vision in QuickTime movies.
